Scenario
A down-on-his-luck celebrity takes a black market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of himself. Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could film his scenes.

The bathroom mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly broken during the fight sequence. A special thanks in the credits is given to the many extras in the theater scene, who were covered in blood.

In a world where fillers, Botox, facelifts and implants, skincare routines and obsession with youth are all the rage in the media, THE SUBSTANCE asks the question of whether the “new, better ‘you’” is really ‘you’ – you are one, but maybe not the same.
Moore and Qualley were a great duo and Quaid played a Hollywood sleazebag in the most believable way possible
